Title Research - THE CABIN IN THE WOODS

TITLES, RESEARCH AND DESIGN

Three thriller films titles -

FILM 1 - THE CABIN IN THE WOODS

1. The title of the film 'The Cabin In The Woods' constructs the thriller genre by generating a sense of enigma, it does this through the basic words of the title, it offers no insight into the plot or story of the film however attracts an audience as it's lettering is outlined in bold red, this immediately demands the attention of a viewer. Also the idea of enigma is created through the words, the cabin in the woods could be any genre of film if you only heard the words, this leaves it open to imagination, however when combined with the lettering and red colors it generates a sense of thriller, horror and appears very sinister.

2. The design of the title conveys a sense of danger as we usually associate the color red with negative connotations, also the fact that it is in a huge font and centered in the middle of the screen means that it is intended to be shocking and immediately catch your attention, almost like its just been thrown in your face, this could be linked to the idea of danger. The background however contradicts the negative connotations that the title has as it is just two characters who have been previously going about the daily work life, and pose no threat at all. This however may have been incorporated with the plan of creating a false sense of security as it leads the audience to believe that
these men are ordinary and that they are just carrying out the daily work tasks.

3. The institutional information included is as shown, including the producer, exhibitor and the director. Throughout this sequence showing each of the studios directors etc. the background is shown almost with a dark flame graphic throughout, with connotations of death, again this supports the idea of a threat and that danger is being
conveyed.

4. No additional story information is supplied here during the opening that includes the institutional information.

 5. Also no actors names are included in the opening, it is purely the studio and producer/director information supplied and all evidence of the stars is absent.

6. The relationship between the opening before the actual film begins to play and the actual film is contradicting. The opening that includes all the studio information is shown with a fiery, almost blood like graphic animations occurring in the background showing what look to be like acts of sacrifice from the past, all of these devices used are implemented for the purpose of creating a sinister mood and alerting the audience, making them realize there is a sense of danger and threat. However as the opening moves along the actual film begins in the background and we can see two men who look like colleagues at an office building/job and look for the most part ordinary, although some of the dialogue may create suspicion we generally see them as normal business men and are not alarmed or threatened at all, i believe they have done this to generate a false sense of security, creating a mask of normality to hide the men's sinister intentions. obviously we don't learn this until the end of the film.

7. For the majority of the sequence the sound is diegetic as it is a dialogue between two characters and then a third joins, however through the section before the actual film starts there is non diegetic sound in the form of a subtle soundtrack, and mainly when the title appears on screen.

8. I feel like im repeating myself and have already answered this therefore i see it pointless.

  1. Strictly speaking Ethan, this is a Horror film, not a thriller. However, you can still apply some of these ideas i suppose.
Is the sound parallel during the institutional frames - does it represent the mood of danger etc?
